Temptations Await
Her silken hair, slow rippling, from her shoulder
Down to the mosses of the sward did reach;
The childhood of her eyes disclosed a silence
More sweet than speech.
From the poem “She of the Garden” by Émile Verhaeren
A young Belgian girl, Leone, always in gardens because her parents loved their garden, and imparted a passion for flowers early in her life. But this child is every child surrounded by the hope and transformation of nature, always a part of nature, from birth to death, and life ever after.
This painting is inspired by my Belgian ancestry. The poet quoted is also Belgian.

Bearing The Foreboded

We sanctify their world.
A Golden Age
Of Truth and Honour
And homely pleasures.
Will our grandchildren's grandchildren
So beatify us?”

Wrinkle And Time
“I don't understand it any more than you do, but one thing I've learned is that you don't have to understand things for them to be.”
― Madeleine L'Engle, A Wrinkle in Time
This is Elza from Belgium, perhaps around 1908 or 1910. She is everyone’s ancestor because we are all linked, every one of us from every country and continent. Her life matters today, and that is what the contemporary background displays.
This painting is inspired by my Belgian ancestry.
Medium: Oils on Ampersand Claybord.
Size 14” x 11”

Transformation
I return the bitterness
It is washed by tears;
Now it is a loveliness
Garnished through the years.
From the poem “Transformation” by Lewis Grandison Alexander
This is part of my ancestral series of paintings. This is the child of Belgian ancestry, Leone, now grown and called Lee. I used imagery of a woman from history, my mom from the 1960s, to show her presence within my consciousness, as a part of the past and yet simultaneously guiding me today. I envision her finding a renewed purpose in an unbounded realm where her soul sings without constraints. Flowers and organic matter represent renewal. Her figuration represents all women from that era while also giving voice to those living today.

Before The Gloaming
I LEFT you in the morning, And in the morning glow, You walked a way beside me. To make me sad to go. Do you know me in the gloaming, Gaunt and dusty gray with roaming? Are you dumb because you know me not, Or dumb because you know?
from the poem “Flower-Gathering” by Robert Frost
Ancestors speak to us from deep within our cells, and we must travel with them, through time and space. Even when we never knew them.
This painting explores how what is written in blood is passed down to generations, even when our ancestors appear as black and white images from faded photographs.
Medium: Oils and acrylics on Ampersand Claybord.
Size 16” x 20”

I Can Barely Remember
Some places are so small
they'd fit on the tip of a finger.
I try to point at where everything was
but I can barely remember.
from the poem “Bucharest” by Charlotte Van den Broeck

Both her parents were from Ghent, Belgiu. But this child is every child surrounded by the hope and transformation of nature, always a part of nature, from birth to death, and life ever after.
This painting is inspired by my Belgian ancestry. The poet quoted is also Belgian.
