This painting is inspired by my Belgian ancestry. The poet quoted is also Belgian. This woman gazes down at a canal and a man in a boat, the lighthouse in the distance. She is contemplating her ancestry, what she inherited, what she took forward into the world after World War II. Other abstract images are found within the background, such as the metaphorical blades of a windmill on the lower left, or the tiny house in the upper left. Different images will be discovered by those contributing their own personal histories to this artwork.

‍ ‍A young girl always in gardens because her mother loved her garden. Flowers and shadows give us memory, but also take us to other more permanent worlds. This is part of my ancestry/memory series of watercolor/oil paintings. This one is more impressionistic imparting that fleeting feeling of another time and yet also of our age.

Both her parents were from Ghent, Belgiu. But this child is every child surrounded by the hope and transformation of nature, always a part of nature, from birth to death, and life ever after.

This is part of my ancestral series of paintings. This is the child of Belgian ancestry, Leone, now grown and called Lee. I used imagery of a woman from history, my mom from the 1960s, to show her presence within my consciousness, as a part of the past and yet simultaneously guiding me today. I envision her finding a renewed purpose in an unbounded realm where her soul sings without constraints. Flowers and organic matter represent renewal. Her figuration represents all women from that era while also giving voice to those living today.

This painting explores how what is written in blood is passed down to generations, even when our ancestors appear as black and white images from faded photographs.
