Do you like cockatoos? Do you think they have a unique personality? I met several while visiting Hamilton Island in Australia, and I have to say that they spoke to me. Well, I think they did—especially this particular bird.

This unique cockatoo painting is funky and original, and it appears in Thames And Hudson's book "Cockatoo," published in November 2017.

For this abstract cockatoo artwork, I used two sheets of Yupo paper: translucent Yupo on which I painted the cockatoo; and white opaque Yupo that contains the abstract underpainting. The two sheets lay on top of each other for a striking, unusual image.

Whether you love cockatoos, birds of all types, or collect bird art, this is a funky alcohol ink bird painting completed after I returned from Australia. I met many cockatoos on Hamilton Island as they perched on my balcony and tried to fly into the hotel room through the sliding doors. I named many of them, and perceived a quirky personality through their eyes. This particular cockatoo seemed to tell me that sometimes in life, you have to "drive on the shoulder," because the road ahead is invisible. It was an extremely rainy day, and I had been feeling rain on many levels, so I picked up my camera and took pictures of this brief, wet meeting, capturing the moment for a future painting. Working with two sheet of Yupo seemed to perfectly capture the mood and message of this chance encounter.
